Vocational Education and Training (VET)

The Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector covers a range of industries and careers such as hospitality, construction work, retail, hospitality, office work and technology. It is designed to help workers get the skills required to enter and succeed in the workplace. VET encompasses many different occupations and industries and is not limited to traditional trades.

The Australian Government started an initiative to help consumers search and compare VET courses and training providers, called MySkills. It is a database of Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) delivering training in the VET sector. It displays information such as price, locations, facilities and more. It is a quick and easy way to find the training required to further your career.

MySkills groups VET courses in the following categories:

  • Agriculture & Food Processing
  • Arts & Culture
  • Business, Education & Training
  • Construction & Mining
  • Defence Industry
  • Design
  • Government, Safety & Environment
  • Health & Community Services
  • Manufacturing & Engineering
  • Retail, Hair & Beauty Services
  • Science & Technology
  • Sports & Recreation
  • Tourism & Hospitality
  • Transport
  • Utilities

All RTOs on MySkills are registered with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and have their scope of training listed on training.gov.au.

RTOs must be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) in order to deliver training to Overseas Students.

In addition to MySkills, the Austraian Education website also offers a search functionality in order to find CRICOS registered RTOs delivering VET courses. This service is especially handy when trying to complete single Unit of Competency courses such as the White Card course or the Responsible Services of Alcohol (RSA) course, as many RTOs offering those courses are not CRICOS registered and can't train sutdents on a Student Visa.
